Date: April 29, 2007 Event: New Jersey Floods Nor'easter Location: New, Jersey Photographer: Gene Dailey Release info: release CAPTION: Susan Hanley and her husband lost pretty much everything in their home to the flood. Even though the living space of their home is built up 8 feet about ground level, the water rose to almost 10 feet at her home, flooding the living quarter under almost 2 feet of muddy floodwater. She and her daughter left as the stream began to overflow its banks but her husband stayed behind to salvage as much as he could before the water entered their home. He filled his pickup and took the items uphill to a friend’s home. Upon returning for a second load, his truck got stuck in the floodwaters and he had to abandon it. Fortunately they have flood insurance that will cover much of their loss, but the emotional strain of just having to deal with the cleanup and red tape is taking a toll on them both. They will stay and rebuild. The debris in the images is all from their home. The neighborhood of Wayne, New Jersey, was under approximately 8-10 feet of water. Many of the homes are built with the living space elevated 6-10 feet with a “basement” on the ground level. This entire river community neighborhood sustained major damage with many of the homes now red-tagged as unsafe.
